Protein packed - Peanut Curry

Inspiration for a blog post can come from the weirdest of places... like a calendar for instance :-) Well not just any calendar but the trusted almanac of almost all homes across India. I was browsing through the recipes at the back and saw a peanut based curry which reminded me of the curry my mother made sometimes.
Peanut curry is generally considered an 'upvaas' dish and accompanies sago or samo (vari) khichdi. But there is no good reason why it cannot be enjoyed on any day you feel like it, is there?

The curry makes a nice spicy side dish to a weekday meal of roti and vegetables. If you use store bought roasted peanuts like I did it takes very little time to make it too. If you do want to serve this with rice, a simple khichdi pairs better than plain rice in my opinion. Peanuts by the way pack more than 20% of protein so rest assured you won't miss dal in this meal.

DANYACHI AMTI (Peanut Curry)
(serves 2)
3/4 cup roasted peanuts (I used store bought unsalted ones)
1/2 tsp tamarind paste dissolved in 2 tbsp water
1-2 tsp grated jaggery/ brown sugar
5-6 green chillies, slit
1 tsp ghee/ oil
1 tsp cumin seeds
salt to taste
finely chopped cilantro to garnish

In a coffee/ spice grinder powder the peanuts coarsely. If you don't want bits of peanuts in the curry make a finer powder.

Mix peanut powder, chillies, jaggery and tamarind water in a sauce pan. Add 3 cups of water. Season to taste and bring to a boil on low heat. Add more water if necessary.

In another pan heat ghee till hot. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle. Pour evenly over curry and cover. Garnish with cilantro and serve hot.

  1. Hi Ashwini,
I remember this from my childhood! I love it!Mum used to make it on Ashadi Ekadashi..
Unfortunately this gives me a severe acidity attack later :(
But heck! the taste is just too good to mind the after effects!

Oh that Kalnirnay! It sure is a treasure, isn't it? I can't say I've had this danyachi amti before - we didn't do shravan nor any upvaas. It was quite funny how all my cousins would make long visits that overlapped dinner time during shravan!

I have a feeling this danyachi amti will be a huge hit in our home.

  9. Hey Manasi it is quite delicious isnt it?
Manisha - I dont know why but its not a common upvaas dish either. My mom made it very rarely even though sabudana khichdi was a given during Sankashti...
MT - its actually beige in color...I guess it looks white becoz of the sunlight
Krithika, Tina, Shilpa, Chandrika - thanks
Saffron - absolutely, love simple hearty dishes

  10. Ashwini a quick and easy recipe and I am sure tastes delicious. I also think it is quite interesting that Konkini cuisine uses a lot of tamarind.

  14. Danyaachi Aamti...wow! I love it. My father misses it, if it's not prepared for Upvaas/Faraal meals. He has a special attachment to peanuts anyway. :)
And like in the jingle in their advertisement, I'll say,
    "...panchaang sope sumangal svabhaave
    bhintivari kalnirnay asaave." :)

    Hi Ashwini!
I made Masala Bhaat for the second time today.Used green bell pepper instead of tinda and cashews instead of peanuts.
This time i used a pressure cooker instead of rice cooker. Even the cookware we use makes a lot of difference isnt it !
I liked it a lot more than the first time.

Priya - I always cook mine in the pressure cooker. Interesting that you liked it over the rice cooker. Enjoy!!
Neelu - Vari is not idli rice. Its called samo/ samo ke chawal or upvaas ke chawal. Hope this helps :-)

Hmmm. This is very similar to the peanut dipping 'satay' sauce found in Singapore cuisine. I use honey roasted peanuts, chopped onion, butter and little bit of ginger/garlic as well.

  32. Nice and simple recipe. one suggestion u can add grated coconut (ola naral) while grinding. it tastes more yummy. also the white colour is b'cas we do not put haldi in it.
